Ekehof has developed it's own training, breeding and general care program for the horses at stud, which we like to call the Ekehof Horsmanship Policy, to ensure the physical and mental wellbeing of our horses.
The first steps
From their first day we dedicate ourselves to every foal at Ekehof. We ensure that foals are allowed to stay with their mothers until around 10 months after foaling, when they are separated from their mothers.
Youngsters
When the youngsters reach the age of 3 they are evaluated to see which discipline they are best suited. Mostly they prove to be promising dressage horses. If not, we aim to provide them with other homes which may provide better opportunities for the youngsters to develop. At this age they also begin their training.
Competition, breeding and living the good life
Through good, loving care and fun, rewarding training we shape our horses into lean, mean athletes. Clean stables, a well balanced diet, plenty of time outdoors and under the saddle, as well as a good 3-4 weeks of summer rest keeps our horses happy. Although ambitious, we don't wish to drive our horse s past their limits, and therefore every horse has to have good and consistent results in the class they compete in before moving up. Not every horse makes it to the Grand Prix, and that's OK.

Retirement
We retire our horses around the age of 18, where we may breed our mares a last time. At this point the horses still enjoy being trained and ridden at least once every day, depending on what their health allow them too.
